How do Teachers view similarity scores and originality reports?

Please note that Teachers will only be able to view similarity scores and originality reports on Assignment activities that were Turnitin enabled at the point of creation. For further details on this, please see: http://go.bath.ac.uk/a8pk

Following student submission of assignment files to Moodle, there is no defined time within which the Turnitin service will return similarity scores and originality report. However, you should allow up to 48 hours before contacting the e-Learning team to report any issues.

For Teachers to view similarity scores and originality reports related to assignment submissions:

Go to the Assignment activity that students have submitted assignments to.

Links to assignment activities can be generally be found in two places - [1] in the central section of Moodle courses and [2] on the left hand side within the Activities block. In both cases, the following icon will be next to the links

Click on the View X submitted assignments link towards the top right hand corner of the activity.

A list of all assignments submitted will be displayed in tabular format, an example of which is shown below.

A Similarity score will be displayed next to the file submitted. This is also the case where multiple files are submitted by a student within a single activity.

The date and time displayed underneath the file above remains the timestamp of when the student submitted their assignment file to Moodle - rather than when feedback from Turnitin was received.

To view the Originality Report, click on the Similarity link next to the link to the file upload (see above). This will launch a new web browser window, taking you to the Turnitin website and the relevant report.

I am a unit convenor. Why am I unable to see my units in Moodle?

Moodle is linked to SAMIS. This means that Moodle courses are automatically created when the unit is created in SAMIS.

The unit convenor (or "Module Tutor") and any Students enrolled on the unit in SAMIS will be automatically enrolled on the corresponding Moodle course.

Scenario 1: I am the unit convenor

The lack of access is often due to the details in the Module Tutor
field in SAMIS being incorrect or incomplete. For example, the unit
convenor for the last academic year may be listed in the Module Tutor
field. As such, you will not have been granted access as a Teacher to the Moodle course. If the Module Tutor field is currently blank, no corresponding Moodle course will have been created.

If Moodle courses do not appear as expected, please check with your Faculty Undergraduate/Postgraduate Office Team
that the Module Tutor field in SAMIS for the relevant unit(s) is
correct. Contact details for your Faculty team can be found at: http://drgn.in/9ZzjYy

Once the relevant field has been updated, you will be granted access to
the Moodle course for the unit within 24 hours, usually overnight,
following the Moodle-SAMIS synchronisation process. If this does not happen, please contact the e-Learning team at: e-learning@bath.ac.uk.

Scenario 2: I am not the unit convenor, but am teaching on the unit

If someone else is coordinating the unit, you should get in touch with them in the first instance and asked to be enrolled as a Teacher on the Moodle course. Details (for them) on how to do this, can be found at: http://drgn.in/yirhR

Information on why you must ask the unit convenor, rather than the e-Learning team, for access to such Moodle courses can be found in the Policies & Planning section of the Moodle Service blog.

Should you do not know who the unit convenor for the unit is, please contact your Faculty Undergraduate/Postgraduate Office Team. Contact details for your Faculty team can be found at: http://drgn.in/9ZzjYy

Further Details

Please note that the Moodle course may appear with a blue or
grey title link on the home page - possibly at the bottom of the list of courses - so please be sure to check the entire
list before contacting the team.

An explanation of the differences
between the blue and grey titled courses can be found at: http://drgn.in/a0GFYg

How do I enable Turnitin submission on a Moodle Assignment activity?

Assignments submitted to Moodle can, in turn, be submitted to Turnitin. It is important to note however, that this functionality must be enabled at the time of setting up the relevant Assignment activity. If Turnitin functionality is enabled after the first assignment submission has been made, not all submissions will be sent to Turnitin.

To create a Turnitin enabled Moodle Assignment activity:

Go to the unit on Moodle where you want to add the assignment

In the Administration menu, click on Turn editing on.

Within the Week or Topic where you would like to add the assignment, click on the Add an activity drop down menu, and choose the Advanced uploading of files option.

It is strongly recommended that you use Advanced uploading of files
because this gives the most flexibility in the use of assignment
activity in terms of multiple file uploads, submissions of drafts,
feedback and resubmissions.

Further details on navigating the subsequent Adding a new Assignment page can be found at: http://www.bath.ac.uk/lmf/download/41786 [PDF].

Please note that the Available from and Due Dates fields must not be disabled and must be set. If these fields are disabled, the Turnitin integration will not function correctly.

The maximum file size that can be submitted to Turnitin is 20mb, so please make sure the relevant field on this page matches this figure (or is lower).

Scrolling down the relevant page, you will see a range of options relating to Turnitin specifically - these are displayed below.

To enable the Turnitin related options, you must change the dropdown for Enable Turnitin from No to Yes. This will remove the greyed out nature of the drop down boxes below this option.

The options outlined in the image above indicate some recommended settings, but these can be changed at the discretion of the person setting up the Assignment activity.

When you have selected options as desired, scrolled to the bottom of the page and click on Save and return to course.

Most enrolment on Moodle courses is handles through synchronisation with SAMIS. However, if you need to manually enrol a student or staff member, and cannot find them when you search for them in Assign Roles, you can add them as follows:

Firstly you need to add the SAMIS block to your course. If you have already got this go to step 4 below.

Go into your course, and click on the Turn Editing On link
	within the Administration block.

In the bottom right corner of the course, click on the Add blocks drop down
	menu and choose SAMIS Integration.

Once the SAMIS block has been added click on the Add User link.

Enter the person's BUCS ID (which can found be on Person Finder), and then click Add User.

Once they have been added to Moodle you will then be able to assign them a role in your course. See How can I add students or staff to my course?
